Faversham have strengthened their back line by signing 21 year old James Etherington, a promising young player who can play at right back, or in central defense.

James, who is a younger cousin of Stoke City midfielder, Matthew Etherington, got his start at age 17 with Grimsby Town, where he played as a reserve. His time at Grimsby was cut short by a horrific injury that kept him off the pitch for over a year.

Etherington completed his rehabilitation last year with a brief spell at Ramsgate, playing a reserve role much of the season while finding his form and fitness after such a long layoff.

The blond haired defender showed great resilience to come back from such a serious injury so early in his career and the defender, who Ramsgate reserves manager Phil Fennell described as “having all the attributes of a great player,” will be looking to stake his claim in the Faversham squad this season.

Etherington made his debut for the Lilywhites coming on at half-time in the side’s 2-1 victory over Sittingbourne and, with Captain Aaron Lacy set to begin a suspension next week after his red card in the game, Etherington may now be in line to for a starting place in the near future.
